Raga Jazz The opening of the Global Rhythms series promises a rich fusion of contemporary and traditional sounds, global percussive styles, raga melodies - cutting edge harmonies. Joining Sanju Sahai are two great musical innovators: award winning multi-percussionist Pete Lockett and one of South Asia's most outstanding and renowned guitarists, Amit Chatterjee. Bach to Benares Expect the unexpected in the second of our Global Rhythms events devised by tabla maestro Sanju Sahai. Matthew Barley has been described as probably the world's most adventurous cellist and is renowned for his ability to move easily between musical styles. He is joined by two musicians whose work has ranged from soundtracks for Bollywood films and musicals (Sandeep Raval) to study with Hariprasad Chaurasia and work with the Royal Shakespeare Company (Lisa Mallet). Their musical journey travels from Bach to the Ghats (Ganges river beds) of Benares and a world of music along the way. Ancient Future Ancient Future is the journey and connection of the past and present - the richness of a cross cultural musical history presented in a modern way. Sanju Sahai is joined by Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy, virtuoso Spanish guitarist and composer Eduardo Niebla and Indian classical violinist Kala Ramnath for a beautiful and emotive performance that finds the musical relationship between these cultures for a sound that is truly global. |
