Bhrama Vishnu Siva

Bhrama Vishnu Siva Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, novelist, musician, painter and playwright who reshaped Bengali literature and music. As author of Gitanjali with its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he was the first non-European and the only Indian to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. His poetry in translation was viewed as spiritual, and this together with his mesmerizing persona gave him a prophet-like aura in the west. His "elegant prose and magical poetry" still remain largely unknown outside the confines of Bengal.

Bramha Vishnu Siva. This performance was commissioned by Dartington International Summer School in celebration of Rabindranath Tagore's 150th anniversary. Originally written in Bengali and working with a well known composer, Pandit Vishwa Prakash Ji, Tagore's poem was translated into Hindi. The lyrics were sung rather than spoken in different ragas to depict the various moods and themes of the poem, that being of creation, preservation and destruction of the universe according to Hindu mythology. This project brings together the beauty of poetry, composition, music and dance.

Below are audio snippets of the live performance.
